John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project

Project Owner: BC Hydro
Location: Campbell River, BC

Description: In 2014, the BC Utilities Commission determined the John Hart Generating Station project was the most cost-effective option to address the significant reliability, seismic, environmental and fisheries issues associated with the 66-year-old facility. Since most of Vancouver Island’s power supply comes from the Lower Mainland, the John Hart generating facility ensures the province’s second largest load centre has reliable power. The project will foster economic development in the region – creating about 400 jobs and sustaining them over five years of construction. The BC Utilities Commission’s approval of the project resulted from five years of project planning by BC Hydro, feedback from the Campbell River community, and a complete regulatory review process.

Our involvement: The joint venture contractors entered into an arrangement with local unions to simplify the hiring process, give unions the responsibility of finding and supplying qualified recruits for the project, offer competitive and fair wages, provide local workers with local work opportunities on the project, provide fair access to work for women, First Nations, and other workers, and to ensure that the contractor was able to hire the best worker for the job.
